History
The Dutch Cancer Society was founded in 1949 by Queen Wilhelmina. Her
granddaughter, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, is our current
patron. The Society's initial funding came from the "national gift" donated
by the Dutch people to Queen Wilhelmina on the occasion of her golden
jubilee in 1948. That amount was more than 2 million guilders. And the
donations have been coming in ever since. Today people in the Netherlands
contribute more than € 55 million a year to the fight against cancer.
Organisation
The Dutch Cancer Society is an organisation for people, but above all an
organisation by people.
Anyone can help in the battle against cancer. Each year more than 120,000 collectors call at 6 million homes on our behalf. And we have more than 1 million regular donors. Every day somebody in the Netherlands is organising an activity to raise funds for the Dutch Cancer Society. Together we can win the fight against cancer.

Mission statement
The mission of the Dutch Cancer Society is to
- reduce the incidence of cancer
- improve the chances of curing the disease
- create a better quality of life for cancer patients and their loved ones
Activities
The Dutch Cancer Society is the only charity in the Netherlands to address
every type and aspect of this disease. We fund cancer research, provide
education and training, disseminate information, help cancer patients
themselves and support patients' associations. The majority of our income,
however, is spent on scientific research. That is the best way to make real
progress in the fight against cancer.
Research
The Dutch Cancer Society does not conduct its own research. Rather, we
finance research projects at universities and other scientific institutions
throughout the Netherlands. These cover the entire spectrum of cancer
studies. In 2009 we granted:
- 30 projects on Fundamental Research
- 25 projects on Translational Research
- 8 projects on Psychosocial Oncology
- 19 Clinical trials
- 13 fellowships
- 6 Research Grants for medical students in residency
Cancer prevention
We put much effort into informing people how to reduce their risk of getting
cancer. Mass-media campaigns are used to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Important themes include encouraging people to stop smoking and warning
sunbathers of the dangers of overexposure to the sun.
Patient support
The Dutch Cancer Society is a powerful advocate of the best possible support
for cancer patients and their loved ones. The Dutch Cancer Society is the
principle source of income for 24 associations of cancer patients in the
Netherlands and for their national federation.
Fundraising
The Dutch Cancer Society is an independent charity, supported by voluntary
donations. We receive no government funding. Besides our annual collection
we also raise funds through direct mail shots, bequests and our own lottery.
Major donors have the opportunity to allocate their money to specific
research and education programmes.
